With less than a month to go before hurricane season 2019 officially begins, you may be asking the question, “What can I expect this year?”
Predictions for 2019
According to Colorado State University, it is currently expected that there will be “14 named storms” in the Atlantic this year. This is slightly less than last year, but more than the average year. However, that is only one source. NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) will not release their predictions for the 2019 season until May 23rd. Only time will tell if they will have a different forecast.
Reliability of Predictions
Despite the incredible advances in technology, no one can predict the weather with 100% accuracy. Last year, some sources predicted that the 2018 season would only include 11 named storms. By the end, there were 15 actual ones. Two of those were the incredibly destructive Florence, and Michael, the first Category 5 hurricane to make landfall in the United States since 1992’s Hurricane Andrew.
Even though we can use all available data to estimate how many storms will form in a given season, we cannot know how powerful they will all be. Since storms often change track rapidly, we also don’t always know exactly where they will have an impact until just before landfall.
Be Prepared
No matter the seasonal expectations, the best course of action is always to be prepared.

  • Know your evacuation zone.
  • Stock your hurricane kit with flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, and a battery powered NOAA radio, as well as water and nonperishable foods for at least 3 days per person.
  • Understand what is and isn’t covered by your homeowner’s insurance policy.
  • Remove debris from the area around your home on a regular basis.
  • Check the stability of your foundation, wall to roof connections, and that your roof has hurricane clips.

In addition to all these important steps, make sure the openings around your home – from doors to windows – are reinforced against wind damage. The last thing you want in the middle of a storm is for airborne debris to come crashing through your home. This is where Armor Screen can help.
The Armor Screen Difference
Unlike hurricane windows, our custom hurricane fabric not only protects you from the first strike from a flying projectile, but every one after that as well. Even better, it provides complete visibility. With Armor Screen, you won’t ever have that claustrophobic feeling that comes from being boarded up inside a home with hurricane shutters, with no electricity and no way to see out in the middle of a storm.
