Hurricane season is ending soon. The Atlantic hurricane season officially starts on June 1st and runs until November 30th. In the Eastern Pacific Ocean, hurricane season starts earlier on May 15 and ends on November 30th. During peak season the majority of hurricanes and severe storms tend to hit during August-October, with September being among the most active of months.

Now that the 2022 hurricane season is near its close, what does that mean for Floridians and those living in areas prone to hurricanes?

1. Near the End, but Not Over

While November isn’t technically the most high-risk month for hurricanes, there is still potential for storms to hit. It’s important to still be prepared and be ready to board up or make necessary precautions in the last month of hurricane season. Even if you think that the brunt of the storm season has passed, there are still significant risks of hurricanes, high winds, floods, and destruction.

  • Any large outdoor furniture or items outside that could be potential projectiles need to be ready to be secured in the event that a storm comes your way.
  • Low-hanging tree branches or other potential tree-related hazards should still be removed and cleared so they do not come off and damage your property in the case of a storm.
  • Emergency kits consisting of flashlights, blankets, a first-aid kit, and non-perishable food items should be prepared and accessible in a known location in case of a power outage.
  • If you live in an unsafe place of residence, trailer or high-risk hurricane zone you should have a backup place to evacuate to with friends, family, co-workers, or a shelter.
  • If your windows and doors are not hurricane-proof, you should have a plan in place to board them up or evacuate promptly in case of an impending storm.
  • Any important documents should be in a water-proof and tightly sealed container, stored well above ground level to protect important information in the case of a flood.

Hurricane prep can mean different things for different people, especially if you also own or run a business or have multiple properties to take care of. Be sure that whatever preparations you need are in place and ready for action throughout the rest of November, extended until the end of hurricane season.

2. Start to Plan Ahead for Next Hurricane SeasonĀ

It is never too early to plan for the next hurricane season, and as one hurricane season is ending it is the perfect time to start looking into installing hurricane protection or impact windows and doors on your residence or business, if you don’t have them already. It is not ideal to begin this project when hurricane season is still in effect. However, after the season has ended, it is a perfect time to begin this endeavor and start planning in order to better protect your home, family, and/or business from future disasters.
